President John Dramani Mahama has returned to Ghana following his participation in the Russia–Africa Summit in Moscow, where discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic, economic and strategic relations between Ghana and Russia.
The visit has attracted attention following several important areas of cooperation discussed between Ghana and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
One of the major highlights is Russia’s proposed cooperation with Ghana on the development of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant. If successfully implemented, the project could significantly strengthen Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and support the country’s growing industrial and economic needs.
Beyond energy, the two countries also discussed defence cooperation, with plans to strengthen military relations and explore opportunities for Ghana to acquire strategic military equipment.
Agriculture was another important area of discussion. Both countries expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in grain production, fertiliser supply and other agricultural activities to support food production and security.
Education also featured prominently in the discussions, with Russia expressing its commitment to expanding scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students seeking higher education.
Another significant issue concerned the safety of Ghanaians in Russia. Discussions reportedly included concerns about Ghanaians becoming involved in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, with assurances that steps would be taken to discourage such involvement.
