One-off exercises and heavy eating can kill you – Health Expert warns

 

A senior Nurse and the Ashanti Regional Non Communicable Diseases Coordinator Madam Lydia Owusu Ansah, has bemoaned the occasional one-off exercise after which heavy meals and alcohol is taken in the name of keeping fit.

She disclosed that it could actually trigger the poor health and eventually death of many who indulge in this unhealthy practice.

Embarking on an advocacy in Kumasi, Madam Owusu Ansah said statistics available to the Ghana Health Service recently indicates that most deaths in the country is as a result of non-communicable disease such as blood pressure, diabetes, cancers, stoke and many others which is a product of poor exercise regimes and sedentary lifestyle habits.

The Senior Nursing Officer urged proper dietary plans and exercise to help stem the trend.

“We have monitored a lot of deaths and sad to say, most could have been avoided if they were exercising properly or eating well. You see people who don’t exercise then one day they tell you they are going to keep fit, right after you see them eating a big ball of Kenkey, fried rice and chicken; drinking beer and all kinds of alcoholic beverages. When you do this, it is dangerous for your health. You have done nothing to improve your health” she warned.

“38% of all deaths now are attributable to non-communicable diseases and we are worried about that, call this could have been avoided”, she added.

Madam Owusu Ansah said it is worrying now to see kids reporting to clinics with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure and many of other related ailments.

For decades only a few cases were reported sporadically. Then in 2017, there was a sudden spike, with more than 2,800 suspected cases reported in five countries. This surge continued, peaking in 2020 with more than 6,300 suspected cases, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo accounting for 95% of the total. The numbers then dropped in 2021 to around 3,200 suspected cases. The reasons for these spikes are not fully known but may be due to deforestation and the encroachment of people into the habitats of Monkeypox animal host. 

Polio vaccine shortage hits Northern Region

 There is a shortage of Oral Polio vaccines in the Northern Region.

According to reports, it has been out of stock on a national level.

This has created panic among parents who have newborns who should have received the vaccine.

The shortage comes at a time the Northern Region has discovered polio virus in some drains in Koblimagu in the Tamale Metropolis and  Nyanshegu in the Sagnarigu  Municipality.

Deputy Director of Public Health at the Northern Regional Health Directorate, Dr Hilarius Abiwu who confirmed the shortage directed JoyNews to the National Manager Expanded Programme on Immunisation.

Poliovirus is a virus that may cause paralysis and is easily preventable by the polio vaccine.

It is transmitted through contaminated water or food, or contact with an infected person.

Ghana recorded the last case of poliomyelitis caused by wild poliovirus in 2008 and the country was declared polio-free in 2015.

But in 2019 a two-year-old little girl was diagnosed with polio and a couple of weeks ago the virus was also found in some drains in the area.

Parents in the region are calling on government to address the shortage
