Niger crisis could plunge West Africa serious security situation

The security situation in wider West Africa could worsen if the crisis in Niger is not resolved, the top UN envoy for the region said on Tuesday.

“The unfolding crisis, if not addressed, will exacerbate the deteriorating security situation in the region,” Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN secretary-general’s special representative for West Africa and the Sahel, told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York via video teleconference from Accra, Ghana.

It will also negatively impact the development and lives of the population in a country where 4.3 million people need humanitarian assistance, added the envoy, who also heads the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel.

Simão underscored support for efforts by the Economic Community of West African States to restore democratic order in Niger, and warned that if measures are not taken, or the situation is not reversed, “it is very likely the spread of terrorism in the region can increase.”

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday expressed deep concern over reports of the arrest of several members of Niger’s government.

Guterres urgently called for the strict adherence to Niger’s international human rights obligations and the prompt restoration of constitutional order, his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

Haq also said that the United Nations and humanitarian partners are committed to staying and continuing to provide vital aid to the most vulnerable segments of the population in Niger.

“To ensure the continuation of this crucial assistance, it is imperative that all parties foster a conducive operating environment,” he said.

The implementation of the revised Electronic Transfer levy (E-Levy) rate of 1% kicks off today, Wednesday, January 11.

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has announced its preparedness to implement the new rate.

The service providers are Airtel Mobile Commerce (Ghana) Limited, GCB G-Money, Mobile Money Limited, Vodafone Mobile Financial Services Limited and Zeepay Ghana Limited.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Chamber said its members are working assiduously with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and other institutions, to ensure a seamless implementation of the revised E-Levy rate.

“The Chamber would like to assure the general public that its members are working assiduously with the GRA and other key institutions, to ensure a seamless implementation of the revised levy from Wednesday, January 11, 2023”.
This follows a directive from the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), on the implementation of the revised rate.

“As captured in the Electronic Transfer Levy (Amendment) Act, 2022, Act 1089 which has been passed by parliament and assented to by the President, the levy on electronic transfers has been reduced from 1.5% to 1%, while the GHS 100 threshold remains unchanged”, it said.

The E-Levy was introduced in the 2022 budget as additional revenue mobilisation handle to support government’s quest to undertake some critical projects and improve the quality of service for the telecommunication industry.

However, government revised the rate from the initial 1.5 percent electronic transaction levy downwards to 1 percent effective January 2023.

2022 World Cup: Qatar becomes only host nation to lose opening game after Ecuador defeat

Qatar became the only host nation to lose the opening game in World Cup history after falling 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Playing in their first-ever World Cup, the Maroons’ inexperience and lack of quality shone early in the game as Enner Valencia scored in under three minutes. A goal that was later ruled out for an offside.

13 minutes after, Valencia, the Ecuador captain, won a penalty when he was brought down by goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb and slotted in beautifully for the opener.

The South Americans doubled their lead 31 minutes in. Valencia again.

The Fenerbahçe forward headed in the second from an Angelo Preciado precise lofted pass into the box in the 31st minute.

The first half finished 2-0 in favour of Ecuador.

In the second half, Ecuador seemed to have taken their leg off the gas a bit, with Qatar also having some good spells in the game.

Ecuador now leads Group A with three points ahead of tomorrow’s meeting between Senegal and the Netherlands.
